Waukegan Police Department looks to fill 14 volunteer crossing guard positions

By YADIRA SANCHEZ OLSON

WAUKEGAN – The Waukegan Police Department is looking to community members to fill 14 volunteer crossing guard positions to aid Waukegan Elementary School children during the 2010-11 school year.

Due to financial setbacks, 14 of 26 crossing guards resigned from the position this year.

“This is the first year that we are asking for volunteers because our funding for this was cut,” Commander Gabriel Guzman of the Waukegan Police Department said.

A volunteer salary of $4 for each crossing period – morning and afternoon – is available, with 7- 8:30 a.m. and 2:30-3:30 p.m. crossing times during school days.

Volunteers must be 18 years or older and undergo a background check.

Chosen participants will go through a free, half-day, training course and will be issued crossing guard equipment.

For information, contact Lt. Ed Fitzgerald at 847-599-2631 or 847-599-2630.
