You need it? ... Take itBy YADIRA SANCHEZ OLSONIt seems that almost on a daily basis there is a new study out that shows how the previous one was wrong. Eat tomatoes, don’t eat tomatoes. Drink coffee, don’t drink coffee. The most recent study results I heard were on the amount of sleep people need. The study found that people need only seven hours of sleep. No more. No less. No way. I remember being jet-lagged some years ago and even though I fought it, I fell asleep. Four hours later, I got up and felt like I had been reborn. I think that’s the best I have ever felt waking up from a nap. Ever! Everyone is different. Some people get energized at night and feel sluggish in the day time. I call us vampires. Others have more energy when they get to bed by a certain time the night before. That’s why I think it’s important to take all of these study results with a grain of salt. We all know we need sleep. You don’t need a study to tell you that. You just have to find the right amount of sleep time for you. And that doesn’t go for just sleep. In our society today, we have to make a lot of choices about a lot of things and for the most part, I think that’s not necessarily the best thing for us. I mean, who needs to have to choose between 20 different types of pasta sauce at the super market? But now that we have created all of these different choices for our lifestyles, we have to choose wisely which is the one that works for us. The one that makes us happy. For example, I just came back from a weekend camping trip. (And for those that read my column last week. Yes, after professing my love for the Lake County Fair, I still missed it.) The trip was great. I didn’t do much but hang out with nature. And I have found that that somehow makes me feel better. Well, I guess I’ve always known that. But now I’m paying more attention. And everyone should to. Pay attention to what makes you tick a little better, that is. Moms, if you need a day when the kids and the hubby have to get lost and fend for themselves, take it! You’ll feel so much better because it’s what you need. Give your body what it needs, give your mind what it needs and give your heart what it needs and you’ll find that soon after, you really won’t need much. |
