Grim news for Mexicn smokers
By HUMBERTO CARRILLO Y COLON
The National Institute of Public Health said that in Mexico five million smokers of the almost 11 million who are addicted to tobacco will die (8.1 million men and 2.8 million women), because they will develop diseases like heart attacks, cancer, cardiovascular accidents and hypertension.
According to the Global Tobacco in Adults Survey, on average men smoke 10 cigarettes, and women eight. Toxic ingredients in cigarettes not only affect those who smoke. The survey revealed that there are 3.8 million adults who are exposed to second-hand smoke while they work and almost 12 million people are exposed to second-hand smoke at home.
Now it turns out that the Secretary of Public Education has made a discovery: parents need to help students in their education.
Based on this, the Secretary created Social Participation School Councils, to increase the quality of education, but it turns out that these councils have been in the law books for the last 17 years.
This makes us think, why until now they discovered that they don’t work?
On the other hand, don’t beat around the bushes.
Over 100 years ago, Don Porfirio, the hated Porfirio Diaz’ Ministry of Instruction was part of his cabinet, which was renamed as the Secretary of Public Education by Revolutionary forces.
Back on those days, children attended schools to learn, to prepare themselves for life, not to educate them, because parents should educate their children.
Just so we don’t move on without mentioning it, Senators and Deputies are doing shady things again.
Senators increased by 61.4 percent the money allocated to purchase life and separation insurance.
This benefit also covers relatives of federal legislators. Also, 128 medical insurance policies that cover spouses and children under 25 years old of each one of the senators were purchased.
On the other hand, deputies weren’t far behind: from September 2009 to February 2010 7,342 air travel vouchers were issued.
These vouchers are “class Y,” which are more expensive because they are not subject to restrictions, changes can be made and are 100 percent reimbursable.
These vouchers are for deputies who live more than 300 kilometers from Mexico City.
But legislators, who are very clever, usually exchange the “Class Y” tickets they receive each week for cheaper seats. Then, they get the difference in cash from the travel agencies.
There are 315 legislators who live at least 300 kilometers from Mexico City.
There are 10 more, mainly from Guanajuato, Guerrero, Veracruz and Michoacán, who were issued eight monthly tickets even though they are closer than 300 kilometers, because they said they spent way too much time on the road.
