In search of local talent in and around Lake County, the Clockwise Theatre company held auditions for their first production, "Kita y Fernanda," on May 15 and 16.
The auditions successfully produced the cast of the Latina characters in playwright Tanya Sarcaho's play, which takes a look at the relationships between mothers and daughters, and a friendship between two girls of a different class and a different immigration status here in the United States.
"Our first production is the perfect play for this area; it's what's happening in the world right now," said Madelyn Sergel of Gurnee, playwright/producer and co-artistic director of the theatre.
Sergel met Saracho at a seminar for women; she liked Saracho's passion and the message her play carries.
Saracho is co-founder and former artistic director of Teatro Luna, an all-Latina Theatre Company in Chicago. The play takes place in Texas, where Saracho moved to in the late 80's from her home in Sinaloa, Mexico.
"Theater is a great way to get the viewpoint across of different cultures and differences," Sergel said.
The cast is a blend of talented women from Waukegan, Aurora and Chicago, and a mix of community leaders such as Catalina Quinones-Nelson, who is playing Concha and is the assistant principal of Jack Benny Middle School in Waukegan, and nationally known actresses such as Wendy Valasso, who has appeared in commercials and in the Bacardi Silver billboard featured in the Tom Cruise film, "Collateral."
"The play is awesome! I think it's going to be a success," said Chante Linwood of Chicago, after the audition that later landed her the roles of Jessica and Chela, the adolescent friends of Kita and Fernanda.
Linwood said she's excited to work with the play's director, Doug McDade of Gurnee.
McDade has had 30 years of professional experience on TV, radio, film and commercials, co-founded and served as the president and managing artistic director of The Gurnee Theatre Company and his most recent directorial work, "The Beautiful People" will receive its Canadian Premier at the Worldwide Short Film Festival 2010 in Toronto, Cananda on June 1.
The show runs from July 30 through August 15 at the Brick Cafe located at 30 N. Genesee St. in Waukegan.
Ticket prices are $15.
