You can watch the games and talk about the teams, but don’t call yourself a fan if you don’t have a wild story that proves you love soccer.
With only a couple weeks left before the opening kickoff of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, the excitement is starting to grow, and some of the diehard soccer lovers are starting to make plans for game day.
“Historias de Aficionados Con Carácter” is a program that asks, “How far have you gone to watch the Mexican National Team play?”
Sponsored by Tecate, the program’s spokesmen have been traveling to cities across the states to promote the search of the most loyal fan in America.
They are retired greats: Manuel Negrete, Luis Roberto Alves “Zague” and Alberto Garcia Aspe.
“This is a really nice program because it invites people to share with others their love for their team,” said Negrete when he made a visit to the city of Aurora on Sunday, May 16.
Fans are asked to submit the story of what they have done to watch their team play to a Web site, where they can audio record it or call an 800 number and leave the message there.
Every Friday until June 10, during the Piolín por la mañana show, one of the entrants will be chosen as the winner for that week.
And the most daring fans with the best story will get the chance to watch México play against South Africa on June 11 with Piolín and the rest of the morning crew at a private party.
“We all do everything we can for love of our heroes,” Negrete said. “I know people that have named their kid after me and other players. It’s all for the love of soccer!”
Visit www.tecate.com/historias to enter. You must be 21 and older to participate in the program. Or call 800-303-2433.
